Try-out /Assessments Notes:
-Parents/Guardians and spectators are required to stay away from the tryout areas. Your child will be playing and showcasing their skills to coaches, and also playing with their friends. Despite what you might think, it is never helpful for a parent to be pacing the sidelines or shouting instructions while a child is playing soccer.
-If your child is offered a spot on a competitive / acadademy roster, you must be prepared to accept or decline at that point. A “maybe” answer is equivalent to a “no”. Upon accepting a spot on the team within 24-48 hours you will receive an acceptance email from Blue Sombrero where you can confirm your acceptance and pay the initial team deposit.
Explanation of Age Brackets, Birth Year, Roster Size, etc. (What does U# mean?)
The US Soccer Federation mandated a change to the age brackets starting with the Fall 2016 season, basing them on calendar year birthdates, not school year. The change was driven by the US National Team and international age standards. NCYSA Classic teams, Triangle Premier League Classic and Challenge teams and NCYSA Academy teams all follow the new age bracket structure.
Note that a player cannot play “down” an age bracket, but can play “up.” Soccer clubs can combine age brackets to form strong roster sizes. Players may also be moved up based on their technical ability. Though parents can request their player “play up,” all decisions for players to play up are made by Chatham Soccer League’s Director of Coaching, Martin Slavin.
The brackets for the 2018-2019 season are below.
Date of Birth | Age Division | Max. Players on Team | Game Format | Ball Size |
Players born in 2000 | U19 | 22 Players | 11 vs. 11 | #5 |

More About the Challenge Level Program
The Challenge Level Program is a competitive level of play, because tryouts are conducted to form teams. Challenge teams travel throughout the Triangle to neighbor clubs, and play home games in Chatham County. Travel is usually limited to a smaller radius than the Classic level. The Challenge Program allows for players developing beyond the Recreation Level to play at a more competitive level with modified travel time to and from games. The Challenge Program is available for U11s to U18s. All Challenge Teams must be a member of a currently registered association that is in good standing with the NCYSA such as Chatham Soccer League.
Chatham Soccer League plays in the Triangle Premier League, of which Chatham Soccer League is a member. Practices take place twice a week on fields in Chatham County while all games are on Saturdays and Sundays.
Challenge level teams participate in one tournament each season as part of the fees. Fees also include coaching fees, player registration and insurance with NCYSA. Referee fees and cost of extra tournaments are an extra cost for each player.
More About the Classic Level Program
NCYSA Classic Program is the highest level of youth soccer prior to the Olympic Development Program (ODP). Chatham Soccer League travel teams that perform exceptionally well at the Challenge level are eligible for promotion to the Classic league divisions in subsequent seasons. Once a team is part of the NCYSA Classic league, it is subject to promotion and relegation rules found in the Classic Handbook. The distance of travel will vary based upon the division in which the team competes. Travel can be local, regional or statewide. Classic is available for teams from U11 to U18 with Chatham Soccer League.
Levels of Classic play are second division (U11-U18), open division (U11-U13), elite division (U13), first division (U14-U18) and premier division (U14-U18).
Chatham Soccer League plays in the NCYSA Classic League. Practices take place twice a week on fields in Chatham County. Games will usually take place on Saturday or Sunday. Home games will be on fields in Chatham County with away games across the state depending on which Classic division and region the team is assigned to. The division and region assignment is done by NCYSA personnel.
Classic teams participate in one tournament each season as part of the fees. Fees also include coaching fees, player registration and insurance with NCYSA. Extra fees are accessed for referee fees, and for playing in extra tournaments.
